The ambivalence of The Believer's treatment of antiSemitism in that it both anatomizes it and exposes it at the same time contributes to the uneasiness about its release.It reminds me of an anecdote told about the screening of Schindler's List in a San Diego cinema. Just as the Ralph Fiennes'SS character shoots a helpless victim and the sound of the gunshot ricochets throughthe cinema someone fired a loaded gun into the back of a seat killing the cinema goer , (presumably Jewish), with the sound of the shot masked by the soundtrack shot. To the extent that the unmasking of Nazism acted as a cover for it, is there any possibility that the anatomizing of antiSemitism could promote it?
