Anti-semitism was a part of this film, because Danny was dealing with it himself, but I don't feel it is ever glorified. If anything, the movie made me want to learn more about Judaism. I thought the music and scenes of worship were incredibly beautiful and touching. This film inspires my faith and challenges me to be more. From conversations I've had, I don't think I'm the only one. Do we need to be careful of anti-semitism? Of course. But avoiding the issue helps foster it. The point is clearly not anti-sematism. Danny was obsessed with Judaism. He loved the religion so much that he couldn't just give up on it and follow another religion. Danny's case might be a little too extreme, but psychologically this is a common behavior. Sometimes people can love something with such passion that they cannot stand seeing a flaw. IP: Logged Message: This movie didn't structure itself around the neo nazi movement or anti-semetic sentiments at all. I'm sorry that you didn't see that. This movie was an amazing portrayal of a young man who struggles with who he is, where he comes from, and the fact that his beliefs don't give him the strength and power he desires. He is a very passionatly confused young man with more focus and dedication than many of us will treasure in our lifetimes. As hard as the subject matter is to watch - and trust me - I don't like watching an innocent young man beaten and kicked in broad daylight either. Danny wanted the boy to hit him...remember? His beliefs were raw...yes...and as he screams out for the boy to stick up for himself he is actually exuding major desperation. He wants to be a part of something that can give him an identity that doesn't include playing the role of a victim...a red flag is waving of how he views himself. Sadly he is so confused he looks toward violence...not anti-semitism. Please don't forget to awcknowledge the scene when Danny goes to the sensitivity classes and the old man tells the story of his 5 year old son...the crux is blatent. Danny is a Jew and he loves to hate his own faith. He hates the fact that he finds strength in sticking up for himself and the things he belives, while the Jews let themselves die during the holocaust...never sticking up for the lives of their loves ones as the old man had done. Remeber the look in Danny's eye as the story unfolded...it's strong! Danny is in a room with a handful of beligerant nazi kids who have no passion towards what they hate...they simply hate. It's obvious that Danny feels more a kin to the old man than any one of those anti-sematic monsters he's grouped in with. One of them claiming the holocaust never happened while coming accross ignorant and abrasive - never passionate like Danny. This is the point you must recognize as the fuel and the fire Bean was creating with this story. Danny believes Judiasm as the truth. More importantly he struggles believing in himself as not perfect and at the mercy of a God that gives him a reason to behave with grace. He obviously can't come to terms with the fact that someone would let themselves be tortured and die in a concentration camp or lose a child - when faith should be strength. Faith to Danny - is power! He would rather die "trying to save his son from the bayonet"...symbolic of why he killed himself in the church only to live in pergatory for eternity. This was an intense movie and gave me great appreciation for the talent of Ryan Gosling. It has to do with other ancestors, too, like my grandmother and two saints, Leopold and Mary. I have written this so many times, on-line and elsewhere, perhaps you'd like to Google me. Anyway, I did see "The Believer," recently, and while I "like" the idea of making a film about an anti-Semite, which is based on reality, I also disapprove of Summer Phoenix, River's sister, appearing in two nude scenes. The commentary implied she did not know of this, in advance, and that is "unfair" to both her and me--since River and the rest of the cast and crew did drugs to do the sex scenes in the Gus Van Sant film, "My Own Private Idaho," which led indirectly to River's OD, about two years later outside The Viper Room in LA! Also, in one of these scenes, Summer appears topless before the Torah and part of the story was that you aren't supposed to, so this is a "desecration" of that rule, too! I'd write more, as I usually do, but I'm getting tired, already! However, to make a long story short, River began to "incarnate" for me, and lifted the worst of a depression that was suicidal for me, when he "bid" me to "live one" for him, as he stood under a shade tree on the family ranch in Micanopy, Florida, where his ashes are scattered. At the time, I was writing 23 volumes of poetry for him entitled, "Phoenix Rising," last spring. It turns out that Summer was bearing Indiana August Affleck at that time, in Amsterdam, where "Ocean's Twelve" was being filmed--Casey was starring in that, as well. He proposed three months after she got pregnant in early fall of 2003, and he still hasn't married her yet, everybody! I only recently heard anything "positive" about my experiences, at a site called Daddy blog or something like that. But, Joaquin Phoenix recently entered a rehab, and I like to think my writing his family, repeatedly of my sobriety date was partly why he did so! I am very proud of him, as you can see. My therapist and I agree that he could be a "role model" for the rest of the people associated with or related to River, since I seem to be the only one in sobriety due to his OD, and I didn't even know him, personally!
